My PSLF Testimonial

Gina, Family Medicine Doctor, Lebanon, Oregon

“Because of PSLF, I wasn’t looking for the job that paid the most. I was looking for a job where I could take care of my community.”

I grew up in poverty and, as a first-generation college student, relied on scholarships, work-study, and loans to finish medical school with $220,000 in debt. I chose family medicine to serve underserved communities, and Public Service Loan Forgiveness made that possible by allowing manageable payments during residency and beyond. I practiced in rural Oregon, delivering babies and caring for families before becoming a professor training future physicians. When my loans were forgiven in 2023, it lifted a major burden, but without PSLF, fewer doctors could choose primary care or rural practice, worsening healthcare shortages.
