Thanks to Temporary Changes, U.S. Department of Education Announces Public Service Loan Forgiveness Surpasses $10 Billion in Debt Relief

The Education Department announced that it has approved more than $10 billion in debt relief for over 175,000 borrowers in 10 months through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. This follows changes the Department announced in October 2021 that transformed the program by changing certain rules to make it easier for public servants with federal student loans to have their debts cancelled.

Education Department Releases Proposed Regulations to Expand and Improve Targeted Relief Programs

The Education Department released proposed regulations to expand and improve the major student loan discharge programs authorized by the Higher Education Act. The regulations propose to alleviate student loan debt for borrowers whose schools closed or lied to them, who are totally and permanently disabled, and for public service workers who have met their commitments under PSLF.

More Than 9 Million Public Service Workers with Federal Student Loans Eligible for Debt Cancellation, Fewer Than 2 Percent Have Received Relief, and Only 15 Percent On Track

The Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) released a new estimate that over 9 million public service workers with federal student loans are eligible for debt cancellation through PSLF, even as fewer than 150,000 have had debts cancelled under the recently overhauled federal program. To ensure every eligible public service worker receives debt relief guaranteed under federal law, a coalition of international labor unions joined with SBPC to launch a new national campaign to reach public service workers with student debt.
