Student Loan Borrowers Get a Rare Win as Senate Approves a Fix

The Senate has approved a proposal that would allow borrowers stuck with student loan debt linked to a spouse or ex-spouse to separate those loans. An extra benefit for some borrowers is that they may now become eligible for PSLF.

More Than 9 Million Public Service Workers with Federal Student Loans Eligible for Debt Cancellation, Fewer Than 2 Percent Have Received Relief, and Only 15 Percent On Track

The Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) released a new estimate that over 9 million public service workers with federal student loans are eligible for debt cancellation through PSLF, even as fewer than 150,000 have had debts cancelled under the recently overhauled federal program. To ensure every eligible public service worker receives debt relief guaranteed under federal law, a coalition of international labor unions joined with SBPC to launch a new national campaign to reach public service workers with student debt.

Since then, about 133,000 borrowers have been approved for $6.8 billion in forgiveness.
