More Than 9 Million Public Service Workers with Federal Student Loans Eligible for Debt Cancellation, Fewer Than 2 Percent Have Received Relief, and Only 15 Percent On Track

The Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) released a new estimate that over 9 million public service workers with federal student loans are eligible for debt cancellation through PSLF, even as fewer than 150,000 have had debts cancelled under the recently overhauled federal program. To ensure every eligible public service worker receives debt relief guaranteed under federal law, a coalition of international labor unions joined with SBPC to launch a new national campaign to reach public service workers with student debt.

However, many others have experienced red tape and bureaucratic headaches when trying to access PSLF. To date, significantly more people have been turned down than accepted into the program. These are the stories of a few librarians and their paths towards PSLF acceptance.
